We spent one short day on the beautiful island of Mauritius. Mauritius lies to the east of Madagascar and has a history of being colonized by the Dutch, French, and British. Today it has a very diverse population that exhibits a high degree of ethnic and religious tolerance. Pictured here is a Hindu temple decked out for an upcoming festival. We were told that all residents of the island celebrate all of the major religious holidays regardless of their religious affiliation.
In planning our day in Mauritius, we thought that going snorkeling on a catamaran sounded splendid. What were we thinking? We traded our ship (where we can move a few hundred feet forward or backward) for a 50 foot over-crowded, under-equipped boat. While we enjoyed the beauty of the clear, blue water, we longed for ground that doesn’t roll beneath our feet and the opportunity to stroll down a sidewalk… Didn’t happen.

We did enjoy a bit of snorkeling and some beautiful views along the way, including playful dolphins that followed us for part of the trip.
Next stop, India!
